Sauliac-sur-Célé -> Cabrerets

C’mon! It was inevitable that this ear-worm became a diverting mantra on this stretch. With this silly soundtrack, we hacked our way through a makeshift horse pasture short-cut back to the main track, which opened into the above glorious vista of Vieux Sauliac.
So mesmerizing was this, that someone went full ‘sun salutation’ while his counterpart watched a tractor mow hay far below in an ever-diminishing triangular pattern.

Pretty cool spot, with a worn display explaining how, after years of depopulation and neglect, most of Sauliac’s buildings were uninhabited and crumbling. During France’s trente glorieuses (1950 – 80), restoration efforts abounded so Sauliac’s rubble was de-ruined, guided by postcards from the early 1900’s.

This place really is pretty as a…
We somehow unfastened ourselves from this special scene and trod onwards, through forests, along country roads, over scree-strewn paths and astride high open fields, enjoying donativo coffees in shady garden.

Delivered by early afternoon to Cabrerets, a narrow hamlet stretched between cliff and the Célé, meant a robust lunch was obligatory at our riverside hotel: tomato-chèvre millefeuille, savoury cannelés and aligot with carrots… miam miam!
The Célé river, our recent guide and nemesis, will soon add its flow to the Lot. Without further ado, we found a nice pool beneath the old mill and weir, and got a wee baptism.

Those are happy feet!
