La Rochelle

Three troublesome trains (late, hot, wrong) from Moissac brought us into another bustling, dazzling French city – La Rochelle. The coastal vibe was familiar with jaunty nautical types, a whiff of salt air and long seaside promenades. Our apartment was mercifully air-conditioned, with a private patio – well worth the 70 step climb!

We loafed for a day: it was delightful to just amble about aimlessly, down warm, fetid lanes, grabbing shade under arcades, dazzled by the sheer speed and intricacy of urban life. .

Oh, and the people! An amazing mix of cyclists, scooters, runners, gawkers, dogs, unhoused and pirate cosplayers of all ages, shapes and colours… yet everyone quite well-attired.

The next day, we put on our tourist pants and saw 2 out of La Rochelle’s famed 3 towers (we won’t be sad). The ‘Tour de la LumiΓ¨re‘ resembles a lighthouse but was also a prison, in which the some inmates whiled away their sentences by carving dioramas into the limestone walls. Stained glass colours now adorn the lantern room area.

We wobbled along the thin ramparts to the ‘Tour de la Chaine’ , which offered some nice views but no chain to yank.

We had our apΓ©ro on a busy patio, watching all of Frenchdom descend on the waterfront for Saturday hijinks. We took in the street performers and hen do’s, the nattily and the scantily-dressed as they strolled along before the twinkling, historic harbour. Our last meal was a doozy of faux-filet and sea bass, in a ‘locals only’ family spot, recommended by our hostess.

We could probably πŸ˜‰ come back someday soon.

Merci for visiting!
